When to book Thanksgiving flights in 2026: sooner is better
Holiday airfares are running 9% to 13% higher than last year for Thanksgiving. Here is when to book and how to find a lower fare.
Thanksgiving is Nov. 26 this year, less than eight weeks away, and if you still need flights, the advice this year is to stop waiting.
The Points Guy, citing data from its partner Points Path, reports that Thanksgiving fare searches are running 9% to 13% higher than last year and Christmas fares 12% to 18% higher. In past years, the usual guidance was to book Thanksgiving in early to mid-October. This year, with elevated fuel costs, the site recommends booking as early as possible, since prices were expected to climb after Labor Day.
Your travel days matter more than the day you click buy. The Points Guy says there is no magic booking day, but flying Monday through Wednesday averages about 13% less than weekend travel, which can mean savings of $100 or more around holidays. Early morning departures also tend to price lower than mid-morning flights.
The most practical tool is a fare alert. Put your dates into Google Flights, turn on price tracking, and check a day or two on either side of your ideal dates. When a fare shows up that fits your budget, book it rather than holding out for a perfect number.
If your plans might change, look at fare rules before you pay. Check whether the cheapest fare allows changes, so you know what you are giving up for the lower price.
Tonight's step: set one price alert for your Thanksgiving route, so the next drop lands in your inbox.
