How I check the morning news without letting it take over

Reading the news first thing can set the tone for the whole day, so I try to do it on purpose and with a limit.

It has been a heavy stretch for news. Markets fell on Monday, oil prices jumped, and the headlines about conflict overseas keep coming. It would be easy to read all of it before I even get out of bed.

I care about what is happening in the world, and I want to stay informed. I have also noticed that when I start my day by scrolling headlines in the dark, I carry that worry with me into every conversation until lunch.

So I changed the order. I get up, drink some water and make coffee first. Then I sit down and read the news for about fifteen minutes from one or two sources I trust. When the time is up, I close it.

That small limit helps me take the news seriously without letting it run my morning. I still know what is going on. I am just choosing when to let it in.

Tomorrow morning, try waiting until after your first cup of coffee to open the news, and give yourself a set amount of time to read it.
