The Padres needed only two games. San Diego beat the Cubs 4-1 on Wednesday night at Petco Park to sweep the National League Wild Card Series, holding Chicago to one run across 18 innings.
The big swing came in the fifth inning, when Gavin Sheets came off the bench and hit a two-run home run on a 100.8 mph fastball. Xander Bogaerts drove in a run with a single in the second, and Ethan Salas added a sacrifice fly, which MLB.com noted made him the youngest player ever to record a postseason sacrifice fly. Manager Craig Stammen summed up the work ahead: "We had 13 bricks to lay. Two down, 11 more to go."
Next up is the Milwaukee Brewers, who finished with the best record in baseball. Game 1 of the National League Division Series is Saturday, October 3, at 8:30 p.m. Eastern, which is 5:30 p.m. Pacific. It airs on FS1, with FOX Deportes and FOX One also carrying it. MLB.com lists Jacob Misiorowski, seen by many as the likely NL Cy Young Award winner, as Milwaukee's starter.
