Why October 3 is Mean Girls Day, explained
Fans celebrate Mean Girls Day every October 3 because of one line from the 2004 movie. Here is the story behind it and where the film stands now.
If your group chat is full of pink and quotes today, this is why. October 3 is known to fans as Mean Girls Day, thanks to a single line in the 2004 comedy.
In the film, Lindsay Lohan's character, Cady Heron, says in a voice-over, "On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was," describing a small moment with her crush, Aaron Samuels. The line was so specific and so ordinary that fans adopted the date, and it has been shared online every year since.
The movie opened in theaters on April 19, 2004. Mark Waters directed it, and Tina Fey wrote the screenplay. It follows Cady, who moves to the suburbs and gets pulled into a clique called the Plastics, led by Regina George.
The story kept going after the original. Fey adapted it into a Broadway musical, and a movie version of that musical was released in 2024 with Reneé Rapp as Regina George. That same year, for the 20th anniversary, the original film returned to many theaters on October 3.
Part of why it lasts is that it is a comedy about real things: wanting to fit in, group pressure and how cruel people can be to each other. Those themes still land with people who were not born in 2004.
A simple way to mark the day is a rewatch with a friend. If you see someone getting left out this week, a little kindness fits the spirit of the movie better than any quote.
