The Golden State Valkyries are in the WNBA semifinals, and Game 1 is today. They host the Las Vegas Aces at Chase Center in San Francisco at 1 p.m. Pacific, with the game on NBC and Peacock.
Getting here took a comeback. In Friday's deciding Game 3 against the Dallas Wings, the Valkyries trailed by 16 points and won 77-73. CBS Sports reports Gabby Williams scored 19, including key shots late, Tiffany Hayes added 18 off the bench, and Veronica Burton had 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Dallas's Arike Ogunbowale scored 30. It was the first playoff series win in franchise history for the Valkyries, who joined the league as an expansion team.
"A switch flipped," Hayes said afterward, describing the team's defensive shift.
The Aces are the defending champions, which makes this a big step up. The semifinal is a best-of-five series, so the first team to three wins moves on to the WNBA Finals.
If you are going to the game, it is expected to be hot across much of the Bay Area this weekend, so drink water on the way in and leave extra time for transit and security lines.
A 1 p.m. tip also overlaps with the afternoon NFL games, so if your household is split, it might be a two-screen Sunday.
